SAFETY COACH NOTES  - DUE DILIGENCE

Unfortunately this issue is often considered only after a serious accident occurs, an order has been issued or there is a potential fine of more than a $100,000.

Due diligence is “taking every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker”.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act states that it is the duty of the employer, supervisor and director to demonstrate “Due Diligence”.

___   out of 10 is your score.  To avoid potential fines 10 out of 10 is the only acceptable score.

The “due diligence” process is based upon the following steps

knowledge of legislated duties
identification of actual and potential hazards
evaluation of the hazard level
development of policies and procedures to control these hazards
implementation of these policies and procedures
communication and training as required
evaluation to ensure that these policies and procedures are effective
adjustments and enforcement as appropriate
demonstration of commitment by all levels of the organization
documentation of each of these steps

Again 10 out of 10 is required to ensure success.
